Axis Hotel Viana
One Hotel with an innovating image was the basic principle of the Promoter for carrying out of the Axis Viana project. The city, Viana do Castelo, with a defined historical centre and an expanding area extended to sunrise horizon, between the river and the mountain. The place, the land of a former bus station, where the old Bandeira Street converges with the recent Capitão Gaspar Castro Avenue, the “old` National Road to Ponte de Lima with the “new` access to IC1, a delivering round about, up North the residential and institutional buildings with large green spaces, up South, following the streets, residential buildings with one and two stories with local commerce and public parking and before arriving Minho river, the City Park. This context drove us to look for a building that wouldn’t bring hierarchy to its front spaces. The Hotel approaches the Avenue because we understood that its volume meets the predominating empty spaces. The overlapping but unaligned volumes created dynamic perspectives that alter its perception within the landscape either giving the impression of a “train` or a “Lego construction`. In floor -2 there is a parking with 150 places, technical areas and Hotel service areas. In floor -1 the Business Centre, The Health Club, a multipurpose area and an administrative area. This floor occupies the existing level differences between the two city arteries and defines the Bandeira Street through walls that in continuity with the roof level, distinguish the different interior programs. Skylights with different heights divide them and bring light to the circulating halls. With access from the Avenue there is floor 0, with the reception, lobby, restaurant, bar and a large leisure area built in the rooftop of -1 floor. On the remaining floors are distributed 88 rooms. At the property’s limit, the proposal for a restaurant gains the appearance of a skylight with larger volume, protecting the outside area of the Hotel. The density of the program and the exterior image of the Hotel influenced us to reduce the variety of materials used in its interior. The homogeneity of the exterior dark colours leads to the contrast of light and shadow and black and white in the interior.
