Anderlecht Football Stadium

Anderlecht Stadium Royal sporting club Anderlecht (RSCA) is Belgium’s most successful football club in European competitions and has been playing its home matches at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium in Brussels since 1917. In 2009 the board of directors decided to increase the stadium’s seating capacity, to add a new roof and façade to the existing stadium. The curved structural surface of this new complex is a steel grid covered with metal cladding. The shape of the surface was not set a priori but has force-modeled in a ‘shape-finding’ process. An initial sketch was developed of the geometry and set the extreme limits. These relate to height limits and restrictions on the amount of additional loading tolerated by the existing underlying structure. Based on these parameters, the new surface generates itself in the same way as catenaries in a hanging chain model. Al the elements are installed under tension. When this hanging shape is inverted, the tensile forces in the elements turn into compressive forces. The Anderlecht shape uses a numerical form-finding process originally developed for weightless pre-stressed systems. The Anderlecht stadium is the perfect example of the interaction of different design means. It combines a parametric defining of the geometry a topological description of the joints and structural elements with a thorough optimization process. The very modest budget compared to international standards, made the development of a high quality and architecturally expressive design a real challenge. Only through the combination of different design methods and after an impressive series of different versions the Anderlecht football club will get the landmark stadium it deserves.
