Alpha Bank Office Building and Branch Office

Edit profile
Alpha Bank Office Building and Branch Office
The new building houses administrative functions, as well as a branch office for ALPHA BANK, one of the major private Greek banks. The 5,600m2 site is on the edge of “Elaionas”, the -currently under gentrification- former agricultural area of Aigaleo within the city boundaries of western Athens. The building is developed in four office floors above ground, with a total area of 4,500m2, one of which is sunk below ground level, in order to comply with the height requirements. Ample daylight is provided throughout the building, even at the lower floors, by an enclosed 'atrium', cut through the whole length of the building, which incorporates free-standing staircases, cross-bridges, open corridors, glazed elevators, the café pavilion and a roof specially designed to admit daylight and to permit ventilation. All office space is virtually open with low wooden partitions and a special sound absorbing suspended ceiling. At the entrance a protected yard is created between the building, the semi-detached branch volume and a vertical glazed sound-deflecting wall, defining the limit between public and private space. Vertical glass panes are used also along the elevations of the building for shading purposes. There are four basement levels, of total area 16,700m2, with M/E and auxiliary rooms and parking space for 335 vehicles. The whole design aimed at the reduction of the energy needs of the building, through proper insulation and shading, maximization of daylight with no thermal gains, ventilation, energy saving M/E devices, ceiling fans in all office spaces, planted roofs etc. Planting focuses on indigenous species with low irrigation and maintenance needs. Artificial lighting is integrated in the overall design with special effects along the glazed layers of the building.
