ACIBADEM MASLAK HOSPITALEdit profile
The main distinction of Ac?badem Maslak Hospital is its versatile association with the area of future’s trade center on the direction of city expansion where several cultural and social facilities are located. Besides its proximity to the city center and easy transportation facilities including the subway station nearby and connected with an underway to hospital, another major characteristic is its position almost in the city forest facing the . 37,500 m2 hospital with capacity of190 beds and 12 operation theaters is built on 13000 m2 land. There are three Cathlabs, two Endoscopy Intervention rooms, 25 ICU beds and a conference hall with 120 seats. Radiotherapy department has 3 Linear Accelerators, 1 Cyber Knife and 1 Bracytheraphy. Softening the austere block effect of the facade facing the forest is accomplished by covering the main facade by two layered glass shell. The monumental presence of the building with the glass shell is sustained at nights by the lighting between the glass shell and the building surface. The stairs in the main circulation areas contribute to the healing and permanent piece and quite feeling with their sensible design effect by the transparent railings standing apart from an austere look, the marbles that are in harmony with the restful color of the paint and attributions to nature such as leaf motives on the walls and sound of singing birds. The microscopic view of epithelium tissue, which is a crystallized net, is used as the base for the conceptual interior design in patient floors and taken as the distinctive mark of the design. The form of the epithelium tissue is stylized to one dimensional form and applied to ceilings as hidden lightening. The patients are taken to their rooms through this protective environment In the patient rooms, an arc staring from the patient head and going through the patient with a lighting reaching to the patient from the center of the arc is formed in order to give the patient feeling that he is at the focal point of all attention and services. As means of functional planning that increase the productivity of the staff and healing effect of the environment, original and up-to-date designs are made in the architectural projects. Some examples are listed as follows: All facilities are located separate from the patient rooms but connected with a back corridor in the most possible proximity to nursing services in order to minimize the staff circulations. For increasing the efficiency and turnover of bed usage, multidisciplinary recovery units that include post-op and pre-op together are designed and connected with operating theaters, Cathlabs, minor procedure rooms and endoscopy intervention rooms. In multidisciplinary ICU and NICU, both central nurse stations and single nurse observation desks for each two boxes are designed. This allows efficient planning in human resources while allocating the nurses for the boxes where needed. Besides, the boxes are exposed to daylight as modern treatment protocols require. Also, radiology department is exposed to daylight in order to reduce the distressing environment due to the examination methods of radiology where usually located in basement floors. In order to contribute to the teamwork, nurse desks are designed as open office for use of physicians and nurses. For patients, their companions and visitors, lobby styled dayrooms are designed in between the two blocks containing the patient floors, close to the ward but separated from wards. The fast and cost effective concerns of project management leaded the structure of the building to a combination of structural steel and reinforced concrete where the under ground areas are in considerable amounts. Another distinguishing attribute is original and en detail application of futuristic building materials along with the traditional and industrial materials of healthcare buildings in conceptual and consecutive designs. The futuristic effects are carried on in the patient rooms with organic touches. The infrastructure of the room enables the patient to control all the facilities the air conditioner, TV, lighting. Another screen is positioned for convenient view of the patient for the physician to demonstrate the reports and radiographic visuals to the patient. The comfort of the patients are increased with various acoustic solutions such as carpet floorings, acoustic ceilings and second glass shell on the facade to prevent the traffic noise while silent common areas are designed for visitors. The patient rooms are designed with different zones for the staff, patient and companion of patient and lightened with indirect led lightings. The most apparent benefit to the community is its conformity to the city texture with its transparent facade eliminating the ordinary austere block appearance; colors, lighting and landscape neutralizing the pestiferous feelings of an hospital and state of the art medical technology contributing to the trustworthiness. The hospital is constructed on the land which was previously occupied by an older building. Comparing the life cycle costs of preserving the building by constructing the new one regular to the existing building as first alternative and demolishing the existing building and constructing a new one as second alternative it is concluded that savings from preserving the existing building is much less than the marginal cost of operations as result of disunity of two buildings in terms of operating costs, infrastructure, implementation of new materials and technology. The design process was carried out not only by the architects and the commissioning authority but also by the domestic and international solution partners and consultants who contributed to the design and construction with their know-how. The high frequency of revisions is inevitable part of healthcare projects due to rapidly changing technology and timing of staff employment. The quick decision making, fast and effective information flow through the disciplines and companies required in revision management in is achieved by physically gathering all disciplines in Ac?badem Project Management house which is designed in transparent effects like Maslak Hospital.
